Now not only did my children have unusual names (see previous post) but the tradition carried on with my grandchildren.

Varinia has 5 children and they are named:

Sebastian Walter Emerick
Ishta Christina - pretty normal
Ayla Elizabeth Frances Crossley - She is going to hate her mother when she has to sign legal papers
Demelza Hermione Ngaire
Ce'Nedra Sardia Anoushka

Anjasa's boys are called Gage and Garion.

Jurgon's little girl is called Rowena Jane. His partner has 3 children from a previous marriage and they are Stephen, Eric and Robert, just nice normal names.

My suggestion is to call your baby whatever you like, after all it is your baby, and there is nothing wrong with giving baby their own distinctive name. You can always give a family name as the middle name.

Although do think about silly names or initials, I know a girl whose name is Theresa Beer. It's not really fair on the kid to have to put up with endless teasing at school.

Naming Baby

One of the things that new mums and dads to be focus on is what are they going to name the baby.

Do they choose a relative name for the the first or at least the middle name, are the happy to choose something totally unrelated to the family and p everyone off.

It really makes a dilemma of the whole naming process, in what should be a stress free happy time.

Well I went against all family conventions when I named my children, and they have funnily enough, followed suit. So here are what my kids got landed with:

Varinia - after Spartacus's wife
Jurgon - after a friend ( bit of a story to this one which I will relate in a mo)
Anjasa - after the heroine in a foreign film "Seduced and Abandoned".

I did register her as Moira Fiona but my husband was firmly committed to Anjasa.

So what happened with Jurgon. I was going to call him Sascha. Well one night after he was born my husband arrived at the hospital and said he would like to call the baby Jurgon. It appears that a long time friend of ours whom we knew as John, was actually named Jurgon.

John and his partner Alan had just purchased a couple of daschunds which they called Gerda and Jurgon. My husband questioned where the name Jurgon came from and it turned out to be Johns actual name.

I of course indignantly refused to name the baby after a dog so guess what, yep, they changed the dogs name to Sascha. No contest. The baby was named Jurgon Yuri Victor. I know it's a mouthful, but he was born on cosmonauts day - hence the Yuri, and Victor was after my grandfather.

Having a baby is an exciting and life changing experience. Espcecially if it is your first baby.

During a first pregnancy, people are unaware of just how their lives are going to change. In fact nothing prepares you for the dramatic change in lifestyle. No longer can you do things at the drop of hat, everything needs to be planned and catered for.

Life becomes an endless round of of feeding, burping, nappy changing and sleepless nights. There are days that you will just manage to drag yourself through, wondering how you are going to make it, and this stress triples if you have a sick or whingy baby.

Having a caring, sharing partner relieves some of the burden, but they are generally out at work for most of the day, while you are trying to juggle housework and baby duties. And although many women have mothers and mothers-in-law who are more than willing to help, somehow in modern society it is often seen as some sort of failure if you can't soldier on by yourself.

So why do we do this to ourselves? I suggest that any new first time mum takes all the help she can get, so that she doesn't become too worn out to function. Let your mum or m-i-l babysit and take some time out to do some 'me' things, such as meeting a friend for lunch or going out with your partner.

Baby will survive, after all these people raised you and your partner. And so what if some of their ideas are a little old fashioned, your baby isn't going to care as long as they are fed, changed and burped.

So girls, take time out to smell the flowers, both you and your baby will benefit.

Someone told me the other day that a friend of theirs spent $1500 on a stroller. Why would someone spend that much on an item that will only last them maybe at the most three years? Well in a nutshell, you get what you pay for.

Now I wouldn't recommend anyone paying $1500 on a stroller but if you shop around you can get a great stroller for around the $200-$300 price range.

Take your time selecting the right stroller for you. The internet is a fantastic place for reviews on any product you can think of and baby strollers are no different. Just type in 'baby stroller reviews' in Google or Yahoo and away you go!

What to Look For in Baby Cribs

When you are buying a baby crib, there are a number of safey features to look for to keep your baby safe.

Check that the side railings go down low enough to allow you to pick up your baby easily - this can be on one or both sides of the crib

Check if the crib allows you to adjust the mattress height - this is important when your baby starts to stand up in the crib. You don't want them toppling out.

The distance between the slats should be no more than 2 3/8" apart so that your baby can't put their head between the slats.

Also avoid baby cribs with decorative cut-outs where an adventurous baby may stick their head or limbs.

NOTE: And just keep in mind that many used or antique baby cribs, as beautiful as they are, do not meet these standards.
